NewsletterFirbeck Times - Welcome Back

~ September 2024 ~

A big welcome back from all the staff at Firbeck Academy.

At Firbeck we are quite excited about this academic year. We have lots of new staff who have amazing things planned for their classes, as do the staff you are all familiar with.

One change you will notice is that our Year 6 classroom has changed location. We feel that as part of being secondary ready it is important for our Year 6's to have a more focused space during their learning sessions.

Throughout the coming year we will be making some changes to Firbeck's interior. This started over the summer break with classrooms and corridors being decorated. We are now waiting for the interior doors along the key stage two corridor to be replaced. We expect all of our pupils to respect the school environment

More details of other changes will be shared, as dates are confirmed.

It is vital that we raise our expectations across all aspects of school life at Firbeck, if we are to ensure all of our pupils become the best version of themselves. As part of this we:

  • have implemented a new behaviour expectations chart
  • expect all pupils to wear correct unform and PE kit at all times
  • will be offering more enrichment/after-school clubs (details to follow)
  • will be reviewing our curriculum
  • intend to develop our pupil leader roles
  • wish to set up a parent forum (details to follow)
  • want to hold more parent information sessions/workshops
  • would like to develop our allotment. If you are able to assist with this please contact the school.

Our coffee mornings have moved to a Wednesday morning. Everyone is welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet with other parent/carers. Over this academic year we will have some focused coffee morning sessions too. For example on Wednesday 11th September Mrs Smith (Executive Headteacher) will be sharing her vision for Firbeck. Please do come along to hear what she has to say and provide some input too.

We look forward to seeing many more of you becoming involved in school life at Firbeck.

We would like to keep you informed that over the Summer Break Mrs Parkinson and Mrs Mitchell both made the decision to leave Firbeck Academy.  Due to this a few staffing changes have needed to be made as follows:

  • Mrs Lindsey will be working with Year 4 providing classroom support.
  • Miss Clay has joined us and will be working with Year 1 providing classroom support.

We will also be recruiting for a further member of staff to join our team to work with Year 5 and support over lunchtimes, more details will be shared with parents as they become available.

As of Monday 9th September we will no longer be opening the gate off Trowell Road (that provides direct access into Early Years) at the start and end of the day.  This gate will ONLY be used for the midday drop off/collections for Nursery children.

At the start and end of the day all parents will need to access school via the main entrance on Firbeck Road.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but due to the outcomes of a recent audit it has become necessary for us to make these changes.

Please can we also ask that if you are collecting from Year 5 that you don't wait along the path at the side of the dining hall, please wait for your child at the end of the path/building.  Once the roofing works have been completed parents will be able to wait on the lower playground at the end of the day.

All contacts with Parental Responsibility have now been sent a registration email for MCAS, we will be using this system for all school meals bookings (including those children entitled to free meals), breakfast club bookings, trips and consents etc.

The app also enables you to track your Childs attendance, receive important communications via instant message and check and update contact information and medical details.

Appointments for our November Parents Evenings will also be booked via the MCAS app so its really important for you to get registered and familiar with this system.

If you have not yet registered please follow the link below and register using the email address we hold on record for you:

As we continue to raise our expectations at Firbeck we will be quite firm around our uniform expectations. From the start of this academic year if a child arrives at school wearing something that is not in-line with our uniform they will be asked to 'exchange' it with an item of appropriate clothing from our Firbeck Uniform Shop.  As their parent(s) you will be contacted and will be able to pop into school with the correct uniform item.  The 'non-uniform' item will be returned to them at the end of the day.

Please be aware that the only item of jewellery permitted is one pair of small stud ear-rings. All pupils will be asked to remove any other items of jewellery. These will be stored safely until the end of the day.

All children will be provided with a Firbeck water bottle and the resources they need in school, please do not send in personal water bottles of pencil cases and stationary as these will be removed and sent home at the end of the day.

In addition a reminder that no make is allowed and this does include nail varnish and/or nail extensions.

At Firbeck Academy we believe that every child has a right to learn in an environment that is safe, where everyone is respectful and values education. It is important to have high expectations with regards to behaviour, at all times of the school day. With this in mind we have revamped our behaviour expectations and consequences overview.

We feel it is important to share these with you at the start of this academic year so you can remind your child what our expectations are.
